My ‘home office’ had moved from space to space in my house as it always seemed to be in the way. We don’t have a designated room for an office, so eventually it ended up in the guest room.
Without having the proper space, I always felt so unorganized with papers everywhere!
Obviously, me being me, I was determined to fix this.. and I think I did just that!
We had a back closet that wasn’t really used. It was a place for extra coats, recycling and clutter.
So I drew up an idea of what I was thinking.
I was going for a cheap, easy, and fast makeover! Something that didn’t involve tearing into walls!
I began with cleaning out the closet and taking down the wire shelf.
And then removed the doors.
Once the holes were patched and dried, I then painted the closet white. While the paint dried, I began building my ikea storage. Billy bookcases for the wall shelves and the Alex drawers for the table base!
I knew that I wanted a super fun and bold accent wall behind the shelves, but something that wasn’t to expensive!
I went with a black and white stripe design and get this! I ended up using black duct tape for the stripes!!! WHATTTT?!?! Yup, that’s right! This was so easy and I didn’t have to worry about taping off, painting, or fearing any paint bleeds.
This roll of duct tape was 5cm wide which worked great to do equal spaces in between. We alternated duct tape, 5cm white, duct tape, and so on. For the full wall, I only used one roll, so the whole accent wall cost $6.00!!
Once the taping was done, we mounted the bookcase shelves in each corner of the closet. We used the mounts that came with the shelves and added a shelf underneath for extra support!
For the support shelf, we used these brackets from Home Depot. We did four to provide support in the middle and on the ends.
I knew I would need some light in the closet and wanted a cute sconce above the desk. There was no electrical in the closet and I’m no electrician. I had come across a genius light tip by @nestingwithgrace and it worked perfectly!!!
Instead of where the bulb would normally go, you place a puck light in there. I bought a pack of three that cane with a remote! (The remote is key!)
The closet was now almost complete!!
For the desk top, I grabbed a piece of melamine from Home Depot and had them cut it to size for me! I then used double sided tape to stick it into place. I left a small gap in the back to run the cords down.
And there you have it!!! A boring, everyday closet turned into an amazing useable, organized space!
